Growing the code

Our daily phonics sessions help the children to build on their phonic knowledge gained in Foundation. When a new grapheme is introduced, we “grow the code”– our visual phonics display. Knowing and understanding the “code” is vital for reading and is a significant area of focus in year one . Daily retrieval helps the children transfer new knowledge to long term memory, enabling them to develop reading fluency. Can your child remember all the graphemes on the code? How has our code grown this week?

Maths manipulatives have helped us to represent numbers to 40 this week. Understanding the value of numbers is vital for mastery, as it is a core maths concept that the children will revisit throughout their time in school. What can your child tell you about these numbers?

Next week- we will be comparing numbers to 40 and investigating number patterns. Please use the 100 square below to spark conversations at home prior to our learning.

Working scientifically- After identifying and comparing different types of animals, the children investigated the diet of herbivores, carnivores and omnivores this week, through a poo experiment! Can your child tell you what you might expect to find in the poo of a herbivore!?
