Introducing multiplication

Building on our knowledge about number patterns, we started this week by making (and eating) equal groups of cookies!

Representing one group is a tricky concept (misconceptions can arise when children count the number of objects in a group rather than seeing them as one group). Practise makes better, so please challenge your child to make equal groups of 2, 5 or 10 at home. Some ideas could include… Pairs of socks, rows of eggs, plates of biscuits, play food, beads or Lego. Send any pictures into the year 1 email address and we will share it with the class.

For an extra challenge- ask your child how many items there are altogether. We have been counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. These songs have helped us:
